A small boy I could dream

into the simple watercolor sketch

of a jackrabbit

in a one dollar pocket field guide

to the mammals of North America,

big enough to contain

all of North America

and its one jackrabbit.

It had veins in its ears that glowed like lamps

casting light I could see blue mountains by.

Someone made them that way.

A desert wind swirled through my chest.
