Notes from a small urban garden: on why I had my rose bushes removed
“When a tea-master has arranged a flower to his satisfaction he will place it on the tokonoma, the place of honour in a Japanese room. Nothing else will be placed near it which might interfere with its effect, not even a painting, unless there be some special aesthetic reason for the combination.” This passage comes from the flower chapter of Kakuzo Okakura’s Book of Tea. It has probably inspired my decision to have all my rose bushes recently removed. Now don't get me wrong.

Notes from a small urban garden: taking and not taking action based on observations
While I don’t go out of my way to adopt permaculture principals, I find that my preferences and concerns tend to overlap with them. For instance, going with local drought-resistant plants tends to be more low-maintenance than fussing over more exotic high-maintenance varieties.
